[UW-GIS-L] ArcGIS License Expiration Warnings

ArcGIS Pro is not so bad once you get use to using it. I promise. One thing I strongly encourage anyone that is migrating over to ArcGIS Pro to do is verify your hardware. ArcGIS Pro has much larger hardware requirements than ArcMap. Don’t assume that just because you have no issues running ArcMap that the same will be true for Pro.

Here are my recommendations for Pro. These are based not only on what Esri recommends but my experience running Pro since 2015 when it was first released.

Power User

* 6 Core or better Hyperthreaded CPU (Intel i7 or AMD Ryzen 7 or Intel i9 or AMD Ryzen 9)
* 64 GB RAM or more
* NVIDIA RTX Graphics card (Esri is optimized to make use of NVIDIA Tensor Cores on their GPUs) – RTX 3070 or Quadro RTX A4000 or better
* 1 TB Nvme SSD

Basic User

* 4 Core or better Hyperthreaded CPU (Intel i5 or AMD Ryzen 5)
* 32 GB RAM or more
* NVIDIA RTX Graphics card (Esri is optimized to make use of NVIDIA Tensor Cores on their GPUs) any RTX 3000 series or later should work.
* 1 TB SSD

You might also want to check out my ArcGIS Pro books available via Amazon. As well as some YouTube videos I have posted to the old eGIS Associates (https://www.youtube.com/@eGISAssociates) and SAM (https://www.youtube.com/@SAMCompanies) channels. I have several ArcGIS Pro how to videos on both. The ones on eGIS are on older versions, so keep that in mind.

Thanks Luke,

Huh! Despite the fact that their web site shows "ArcGIS 10.8.2 is the current release of ArcMap and will continue to be supported until March 01, 2026" (https://support.esri.com/en-us/knowledge-base/arcmap-continued-support-000029721<https://support.esri.com/en-us/knowledge-base/arcmap-continued-support-000029721>). I guess "support" does not include "granting licenses."

After having weathered at least four fundamental Esri flagship GIS software overhauls, and with ArcGIS Pro being a mature product, I do recommend making the switch ASAP if you have not already done so. Well, you do have three whole days to migrate all of your projects while you can still open them in ArcMap!

Well, I have heard back from ESRI that they will NOT BE ISSUING more ArcMap licenses. Once they expire on September 7th there will be no option to use ArcMap any longer. So they only option is to migrate to ArcGIS Pro. Here are a few resources to help you do so.

If you need to update your ArcGIS Server licenses, request an updated license file here:

UW ArcGIS Users-

ArcMap has reached the mature support cycle and we do not have new licenses for it at this time. I have asked ESRI about the possibility of getting some perpetual licenses so we can continue using ArcMap but they have been pretty clear that no new ArcMap licenses would be issued. We shall see.

ArcMap after mature support (esri.com)<https://www.esri.com/about/newsroom/arcuser/moving-from-arcmap-to-arcgis-pro-after-mature-support/>

Time to migrate to ArcGIS Pro. If you are getting license expiration warnings in ArcGIS Pro, it’s time to switch to ESRI provided licensing as the “old way” of licensing is no longer supported. Instructions for how to do that are here:
