[UW-GIS-L] ArcGIS Installation for Mac for Research Project

Hi folks,

It IS doable to set up and run ArcGIS locally on macOS, including newer ones with Apple silicon, but it does require some hoops, and particularly for the ARM processors.

1. First, you need Windows virtualization software - the “standards” are Parallels Desktop and VMWare Fusion.

2. The trickiest part is getting a Windows installer for ARM processors. (If you have a Mac with the Intel processor, you can use a standard version Windows installer.) As I recall, the Windows Insider Program is the route to do this.

3. With a Windows virtual machine (VM) created, it’s then a matter of installing ArcGIS on the VM.

All of this of course is predicated on having sufficient RAM, processor capacity, etc., as folks noted previously.

Cheers,
Steven
