Dear Bo:

Hope this email finds you well. Dan Sui and I are guest-editing a special
issue on “GIScience in a Hybrid Physical-Virtual World” which will be
published in Transactions in GIS. I am attaching a PDF copy of the CFP as
well as an email announcement of the CFP below. We invite you and your
team to submit a manuscript to this special issue.

Please also help us distribute this CFP to other people and groups who may
be interested in submitting a manuscript to this special issue. Thank you
in advance! Have an enjoyable and productive summer!

All the best,

Shih-Lung and Dan

*Special Issue on GIScience in a Hybrid Physical-Virtual World*

*Transactions in GIS*

*Synopsis:*

We now live in an increasingly hybrid physical-virtual world enabled by
modern technologies. The COVID-19 pandemic further motivated human
activities in virtual space (e.g., zoom meetings, online shopping, online
teaching, telehealth, etc.) and modified human activities in physical
space. These changes in virtual space and in physical space often are
intertwined with each other that create a hybrid physical-virtual world.
Furthermore, changes taking place in this hybrid physical-virtual world
have significant implications to major challenges facing human societies
such as climate change, sustainable development, public health, social
justice, among others. Are Geographic Information Science (GIScience) and
Geographic Information Systems (GIS) ready to address these changes and
challenges in today's hybrid physical-virtual world? This special issue
welcomes contributions that cover conceptual/theoretical,
technological/methodological, or educational/social aspects of making
GIScience/GIS useful and relevant in today’s increasingly hybrid
physical-virtual world.

The scope of this special issue includes, but not limited to, topics such
as:

- Concepts of physical space, virtual space, hybrid physical-virtual
space and their relevance to GIScience/GIS
- Representations of physical space, virtual space and hybrid
physical-virtual space in GIScience/GIS
- Analysis and visualization of interactions between physical space and
virtual space
- Changes needed in GIScience/GIS education as we move GIS beyond the
traditional focus on locations in physical space
- Social implications as GIScience/GIS are used to support studies
involving human activities in a hybrid physical-virtual space

*Timeline and Submission Procedure:*

- Abstract submission deadline: August 31, 2023
- Full manuscript submission deadline: December 31, 2023

We welcome submissions from scholars in all relevant fields. Interested
authors should first submit a short abstract (300 words max) to Shih-Lung
Shaw (sshaw at utk.edu) and Dan Sui (dsui20 at vt.edu) by August 31, 2023 for a
review of its fit to the theme of this special issue. Suitable abstracts
will be invited to submit full manuscripts although the invitation does not
guarantee acceptance to the SI. Full manuscripts, including all supporting
materials, should be submitted using the journal's submission portal by
December 31, 2023, and the authors should specify this SI as the target
during their submission. Author guidelines for manuscript preparation and
submission are available at

Papers will be published online shortly after a manuscript is accepted for
publication in this special issue.
