Abstract: I joined NSF on July 18, 2022 as a rotator via an
Intergovernmental Personnel Act (IPA) assignment. With fascinations and
optimism, I venture into the country’s most respectful and at times
mysterious funding agency that supports basic science research across all
disciplines. Besides standard federal training, I get to know NSF’s culture
and principles that guide operations within and outside the agency,
including interactions with prospective principal investigators (PI) and
managing merit reviews. In this talk, I would like to share what I, as a
geographic information scientist, have learned at NSF, what common issues I
see in proposals, and what funding opportunities are available for
advancing research and education in GIScience, broadly defined. I welcome
questions and comments on how GIScience communities can leverage NSF
support to advance research and education throughout the webinar.
Presenters’ Bio: May Yuan received all her degrees in Geography: B.S. 1987
from National Taiwan University and M.S. 1992 and Ph.D. 1994 from State
University of New York at Buffalo. She is Ashbel Smith Professor of
Geospatial Information Sciences (GIS) in the School of Economic, Political,
and Policy Sciences at the University of Texas at Dallas (UT-Dallas). She
is an elected fellow of the American Association for Advancement of Science
(AAAS) and the American Association of Geographers (AAG) Fellow and the
Editor in Chief of the International Journal of Geographical Information
Science. Her research aims to understand geographic dynamics across domains
and scales by developing new geospatial methods for knowledge
representation, spatiotemporal computing, and information synthesis.
Geographic dynamics include interactions, changes, and movements of people,
features, events, and processes in human, biophysical, and built
environments. She joined NSF/SBE/BCS in July 2022 as a program director of
Human-Environment and Geographic Science (HEGS) and Human Networks and Data
Science (HNDS).*
